Melissa Hale was from dark future 2026 where her family were all dead and she travels back in the past to fix that all. In Season 3, the sisters learn Melissa's true form that she is half-witch and half-whitelighter. In the middle episode, Piper learns Melissa is her and Leo's future daughter from the dark future.
Phoebe and Prue's death...
In the season 3 finale, Prue and Phoebe are killed but before she and Phoebe swap powers so that Phoebe can save Cole and Melissa can help Prue & Piper vanquish Shax but it goes wrong when Phoebe is trapped in the underworld and can't help her sisters. Piper dies at the hospital because some crazy maniac woman shot her when Tempus reverses time but it causes the death of both sisters Prue and Phoebe Halliwell.
Meeting Paige Matthews and Becoming Charmed
Piper grieves over Prue and Phoebe's death and struggles with the demise of the Power of Three until Piper and her daughter, Mel discover the existence of another charmed, Paige, a Whitelighter and witch.
After Grams and Patty leave, Leo, Piper and Mel come downstairs and find Paige in the manor. Piper shakes Paige's hand. The chandelier shimmers and bathes them in bright light. Shax barges through the door and the three women flee to the attic. Shax breaks the door, and the three women recite the spell from the Book of Shadows, vanquishing Shax at last. Paige, however, is frightened and runs from the manor.
